Deconstruction of the former champlain bridge

Inaugurated in 1962, the Champlain Bridge had to be dismantled due to the premature deterioration of critical structural elements. Spanning the Seaway used by marine traffic, the deconstruction involved the removal of a massive span over 100 meters long and weighing more than 2,000 tonnes, suspended between two cantilevered steel structures on either side of the channel. This colossal operation had to be carried out while minimizing disruptions to maritime navigation on this vital artery of the North American economy.

Contribution BFS

  • Analysis and management of risks related to the contractor’s proposed deconstruction methods
  • A collaborative approach involving the client, project manager, and contractor to support the development of win-win solutions for the project
  • Risk analysis workshops as collaborative forums encouraging cross-disciplinary issue assessment and sharing of technical and strategic expertise
  • Optimization of deconstruction methods and development of tailored risk response plans adapted to the project’s specificities
  • Periodic site visits to monitor implementation and the effectiveness of selected measures to manage risk sources
